26 OCC-Certified Teachers Strengthen Outdoor Education at qSD
Did you know…
麻豆视频 has 26 teachers certified in the Outdoor Council of Canada (OCC) Field Leader Hiking Certification, with OCC certified teachers in schools across our district.
The OCC Field Leader certification provides a leadership and decision-making framework that supports teachers to plan and implement safe and meaningful outdoor learning experiences for students. During the course, teachers have the opportunity to practice planning and preparing safe outings within the context of our district’s organizational structure.
Once certified, teachers become members of the OCC community of practice, which offers ongoing support as they continue to develop physically and emotionally safe outdoor activities grounded in age appropriate and impactful curriculum.
This course is offered to teachers through our district and is led by qSD’s Outdoor Learning Coordinator, Karin Westland, who is a certified OCC instructor. Additionally, Ryan Barfoot, qSD’s Sustainability Coordinator and National Chair of the Outdoor Council of Canada, is also a certified instructor and supports the program by facilitating select course modules.
Continuing to offer this certification remains a priority for 麻豆视频 and qathet teachers, demonstrating the prioritization of outdoor learning as a pedagogical approach that not only enhances all curricular learning but also supports youth mental health and well-being and environmental sustainability.
